Raymond Robertson

Raymond R. Robertson, 98, long time Murfreesboro resident, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in Longview, Texas. He was born May 14, 1916 in Sulphur Rock, Arkansas to Reverend George W. Robertson and Julia Hix Robertson. Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 23 at 10:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro. Burial will be in Murfreesboro Cemetery under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home, Murfreesboro. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 22, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Latimer Chapel, Murfreesboro. Raymond was united in marriage to Magle (Madge) L. Rider of Patmos, Arkansas on January 6, 1940. He was employed by Southwestern Electric Power Company until he was drafted into the US Army. He served from 1942 through 1945 with the Signal Corps. He was assigned to the 20th Air Force. He spent 18 months in India and was later part of the forces being assembled for the invasion of mainland Japan when the war ended. Raymond then returned to his wife and first daughter and resumed his career with SWEPCO which spanned a period of 44 years. He was the manager of the Murfreesboro office for many years. He then ended his career with SWEPCO as the manager of the Nashville-Murfreesboro offices until his retirement in 1981. Raymond was very active in the community of Murfreesboro. He served on the Industrial Development Committee and Chamber of Commerce. He was the president of the Civic Improvement Council in the fifties and sixties. This committee was responsible for bringing the Armour Processing Plant to Murfreesboro. He also served on the building committee for Pike County Hospital and on the governing board of the hospital. He served on the school board for 18 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on various committees including a term as chairman. He was a member of the Lion's Club and a member of the Murfreesboro Volunteer Fire Department. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, a sister and his wife of 68 years. He is survived by three daughters and one son: Joy Carter and husband Gene of Hot Springs, Nancy Floyd and husband Rick of Murfreesboro, Robin Saunders and husband Max of Longview, Texas, and Bob Robertson and wife Jan of Paris, Texas. In addition to his children, he also survived by seven grandchildren: Chuck Carter, Caren Dodd, Sherry Semmler, Brad Deal, Scott Saunders, Lauren Teague and Greg Saunders; six great-grandchildren: Carter and Callie Dodd, Zackary Semmler, Kailee Backus, Braden Deal and Claire Teague. Raymond lived a good life. He had a strong sense of personal responsibility to family, community and friends. He had a ready sense of humor, smile and infectious laugh. He was always ready to work hard and embrace challenges until the goal was met with humility and a loving spirit Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Murfreesboro.
