Mrs. Cowling was born on January 20, 1921, in Mineral Springs. She was the third of four children to parents Claiborne Gaines Tiffin and Josie Mae Caldwell Tiffin. At an early age Bernice and a brother were encouraged to play the violins as they accompanied her sister on the piano and another brother on the guitar. Berniceâ™s young husband, Earl, shared this love of music and the two spent their lives enjoying friends and family through the singing and playing of gospel music. Her pride and joy was listening to her Cowling family quartet. Mrs. Cowling was the linotype machine operator for the Nashville News and in her later years the Activities Director for the Nashville Nursing Home. She also helped Earl operate their farm in Mineral Springs as they raised their four children. She was a life-long resident of Howard County, Arkansas, a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Known by her grandchildren as âœMamma Beanâ, she was a gifted homemaker and talented in sewing, cooking, and gardening. She is remembered for her quiet, loving, and fun demeanor, her affection for her husband, and her amazing biscuits. To their children, Bernice and Earl left a legacy of a loving marriage, the gift of music, and a heritage of those who fear the Lord. Mrs. Cowling was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Joseph Earl Cowling; brother, Emery Tiffin; sister, Lois Tiffin Nutt; brother, Paul Tiffin; and daughter-in-law Kathy Cowling.
