John Cothren, age 88, died on Thursday, November 1, 2012 in Nashville. He was born in Nathan, Arkansas to Arthor and Ella (Cornish) Cothren on October 20, 1924. He had a younger brother, Archie and an older sister, Geneva Reese who preceded him in death. John is survived by his wife, Emogene (Reese), and son, Johnny, who resides in Muncie, Indiana. He has 2 granddaughters, and 4 great grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Kevin Hensley, live in Winterset, Iowa and have 3 children, Samuel, Abe, and Jud; and Andrea and husband, Rusty Creek who live in West Harrison, Indiana, and have one daughter named Sadie. Because of the depression in 1930�s John went to work at the cinnabar mines at Parker Creek and later at age 16 years, joined the cc camps and worked in Arkansas, Washington, and Oregon. Upon returning to Arkansas at age 19, John married Emogene and moved to Gary, Indiana and started work with U.S. Steel. John went into the U.S. Navy when WWII started and served until the end of the war. After putting in 43 years in the steel mills, he retired and came home to Nathan, Arkansas, where he raised cattle and worked for the Corp of Engineers for 14 years and then at the Diamond mine for 5 years. At 80 he had a battle with cancer and won, bur developed heart problems at 83. God blessed him with 5 more years. During his life John believed in hard work, family, and country!! He was a mason, scout leader, active in Democratic Party, and member of Biggs Chapel Church in Nathan. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Biggs Chapel in Nathan with Brother Al Terrell officiating under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home of Nashville. Visitation will be on Saturday, from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. in the Church. Memorials may be sent to Biggs Church or Academy Cemetery.
