Jimmy Leon Phillips, Sr., age 89 of Texarkana, Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024 in Texarkana. He was born on November 18, 1934 in Okay, Arkansas to the late Herbert and Nova Dodson Phillips.
Jim worked for Bowie County at the Court House for 29 years as the Health Inspector. In his younger years, he served his country in the United States Air Force for 4 years. He loved cheering on the Arkansas Razorbacks in all sports, as well as watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He also enjoyed coaching the American Legion Indians baseball team for 18 years. He was a father figure and mentor to many, and helped several boys get into college baseball. He took his team to the state championship for four years in a row. The team won the state championship in 1982 and played in the midsouth regionals in 1982. He helped start the baseball program at Texarkana College and was their first head baseball coach. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Phillips.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Phillips; two sons Jimmy Phillips, Jr. and wife Karen and Billy Phillips and wife Nikki; one brother, H.L. Phillips and wife Diane; one sister Sara Christensen and husband Frank; five grandchildren, Addison Phillips, Gavin Phillips, Aiden Phillips, Elizabeth Schadegg and Emily Allen; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Meeting Room 2, 2910 S. Cowhorn Creek Loop, Texarkana, TX 75503. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home in Nashville.
